LDS Business College - Salt Lake City

Yes, most people attending LDS Business College are from Utah. Most of them were born and raised here. Still, one thing you'll hear quite often by the negative folks on campus is that in Salt Lake City there is nothing to do. While living in a calm city may have its benefits, and although some people might prefer the quiet over the agitated, here are a few things I've found that kept me entertained while I attended LDS Business College:

Utah Symphony

Perhaps listening to an orchestra play for a couple of hours isn't quite your cup of tea... neither is it mine. But let me share something with you that has helped me in my life. If you're taking the time to do something, why not make an effort to do it well? If you can do something better, why not do it? If you can enjoy a situation, should you do it? And if so, will you? There are lots of things about the state of Utah that I wasn't always a big fan of when I first got here *snow*, but as I've made the attempt to enjoy it, I've found that not only was it not as bad as I'd originally judged it to be, but also that life is a lot more enjoyable when you diversify things and try a little bit of everything. This is one of the keys that made my experience at LDS Business College so great.

Anyhow, the Utah Symphony... the Utah Symphony is a full time orchestra based here in Utah. They are housed in the Abravanel Hall, which a lot of people consider to be the greatest concert hall on earth. I wouldn't be able to confirm this one, as I havne't been to every concert hall in the world - yet. Still, the hall is very close to LDS Business College.

Watching the Utah Symphony perform is a very unique experience. Tickets usually run around $20.00 for an event, but discount coupons are easily found, especially online.

Utah Jazz

Yes, there are more teams in the NBA you can watch in other places. Most of them are better and more entertaining to watch than the Jazz, but if you're attending LDS Business College, you absolutely must take the time to watch a game or two. With your Student ID Card you can park at the college and walk across the street and check out D-Williams, Boozer, and..., well, maybe the Bear, and you woudln't have to worry about paying 5 bucks for parking. Doing so can save you enough money to get a hot dog and not go over your poor college student budget, which does help out even if you're going to LDS Business College...

LDSBC Soccer League

Maybe this isn't the greatest thing to list here, specially if you're not a big soccer fan (or player). However, the bi-annual competitions have been pretty fun in the past. During the winter they register for a tounament at a place called Let's Play Soccer, which is an indoor hockey arena of sorts. It's actually a very weird kind of soccer, specially if you're coming from outside the country where you've played real soccer before. Yet, at $5 this is well worth the trouble.

During the warmer months they usually hold the tournaments at a neighboring High School (West High), which as a few smaller grass fields. For more important games LDS Business College will sometimes bring in a referee just for that game, which is a nice touch.

There are lots of other things to do here in town for all of you LDS Business College patriots. I've only listed a few here to get started. I have yet to find a person complaining about the lack of things to do in Salt Lake, whom I wasn't able to indicate at least 5 really awesome places to visit, things to do, and experiences to enjoy. You just have to define what you're really into, then ask the right people where you need to go to find the real fun.

  1. I'm sorry, but I must correct you here. Most people who attend LDSBC are not from Utah. To say "most" would be implying a majority, which is certainly not the case. With students from all 50 states and over 60 foreign countries, Utahns are actually a minority on campus.

Also, I've never heard anyone on campus complain about having nothing to do in Salt Lake. Compared to Provo and Rexburg, Salt Lake has everything you could ask for.
